(Eagle News) — The Departments of Transport and Science and Technology have signed an agreement to develop an automated fare collection system that will benefit mass transit systems.

According to DOTr, the agreement, signed by DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista and DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., is aimed at establishing a laboratory testing facility in Bicutan and “regulating the roles and responsibilities of the parties with respect to Fare Media’s certification and validation testing Transit Readers for the (AFCS).”

“The DOTr-DOST partnership demonstrated through this MOA is purely a showcase for meaningful collaboration and enhancing and promoting the well-being of all stakeholders for the AFCS in the country,” said Bautista.

According to the memorandum, both the DOTr and the DOST shall establish state-of-the-art test equipment and the validation facility through the Electronics Product Development Center managed by the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute.

According to DOTr, the EPDC is the country’s first dedicated government electronics development and one-stop shop facility capable of providing design, prototyping and testing services for the electronics industry.

According to DOTr, it is also testing the Automated Guideway Transit developed by DOST to connect the four terminals of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Bautista said the bulk transportation option will benefit passengers transferring through the four NAIA terminals.
