Elon Musk says Twitter will overhaul the way it verifies users

2 min read

Twitter will overhaul its user verification process, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Sunday, just days after he took over one of the world’s most influential social media platforms.

“The entire verification process is being overhauled,” Musk said in his tweet, without giving any further details.

Twitter TWTR.N is considering charging for the coveted blue tick that verifies the identity of its account holder, technology newsletter Platformer reported on Sunday, citing two people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, users would have to subscribe to Twitter Blue for $4.99 a month or lose their “verified” badges as the project progresses.

Tesla Inc.’s CEO hasn’t made a final decision yet and the project could still be shelved, but according to Platformer, it’s likely that verification will become part of Twitter Blue.

Separately, The Verge reported on Sunday that Twitter will increase the subscription price for Twitter Blue, which also verifies users, from $4.99 per month to $19.99 per month, citing internal correspondence viewed by them.

Twitter Blue launched in June last year as the platform’s first subscription service, offering “exclusive access to premium features” on a monthly subscription basis, including an option to edit tweets.

The ability to edit tweets was also made available earlier this month after Musk launched a Twitter poll in April asking his millions of followers if they would like an edit button. Over 70% said yes.

According to a separate Verge report Sunday, citing employees familiar with the matter, Musk has also requested that logged-out users visiting the Twitter site be redirected to the Explore page, which shows trending tweets. – Reuters
