The obesity rate in the United States has increased from 12% in 1991 to 42% today. “We know that women living with obesity are at greater risk of developing serious health problems and other diseases,” said Beth Battaglino, RN-C, CEO of HealthyWomen. There is also a high level of shame and stigma associated with the disease – and even a lack of awareness that obesity is a disease.
“So often the underlying causes of obesity in black women are not fully understood,” said Linda Goler Blount, MPH, President and CEO of Black Women’s Health Imperative. “Our partnership provides both organizations with a platform to engage all women, healthcare providers and policy makers to understand and address the fundamental relationship between social and racial stress, obesity and disease.”
The multi-faceted Reclaim Your Wellness campaign raises awareness of obesity as a disease and a national health crisis, free from stigma, judgment and bias. Both partners provide tailored educational and lifestyle content and resources, as well as interactive tools, podcasts and real-life women’s stories about the physical and emotional impact of obesity.
The program is supported by Novo Nordisk.
