Harris says US should fund more capacity-building programs for PHL maritime authorities: PCG

(Eagle News) — United States Vice President Kamala Harris said the US would allocate additional resources to support the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and other Philippine maritime law enforcement agencies, the PCG said.

According to the PCG, based on Harris’ speech aboard BRP Teresa Magbanua on Tuesday, November 22, this should increase the capacity of affected authorities to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, improve their surveillance systems and upgrade their Gear.

“For the PCG, you are at the forefront of advocating for an international rules-based order. Every day as you patrol these waters, you abide by rules and norms that are critical to the prosperity of the Filipino people and those around the world,” Harris said, according to the PCG statement.

The statement said Elmer Sarmiento, undersecretary of the Department of Transportation for Maritime Affairs, thanked the United States for continuing to provide capacity-building opportunities for PCG officers and personnel.

“The United States has always been ready to provide the PCG with much-needed capacity-building opportunities, particularly in strengthening the capabilities of its personnel, particularly in the areas of maritime security, law enforcement and maritime security,” he said in the statement.

“Today’s visit by the US Vice President is another strong manifestation of the United States government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Philippines,” he added.

Harris is the highest-ranking US official to visit the country under President Bongbong Marcos’ administration.
