Investing in Deep Technology Through Research and Development: The Leave-a-Nest Way

The interconnected webs of societal issues in the Philippines still remain unaddressed due to the lack of deep technology focus in the country. Deep Tech, a niche focus of Leave a Nest, aims to find solutions to pervasive problems in various aspects of the community through extensive technological and scientific research that require unique and complex strategies for implementation in society.

Undeniably, similar to some parts of the world, the startup ecosystem in the Philippines has been dominated by founders and technologists focused on improving and innovating in the fintech and e-commerce industries. As Filipinos’ increasing reliance on online transactions (such as online shopping, banking and loans, social media, etc.) created a market large enough that app-based startups began to burgeon and doubled in size in half a decade . But at the same time, perplexing societal problems plague Filipino society, most of which are not solved by existing startups. This is where deep technology comes into play.

To further establish this type of technology, Leave a Nest Philippines will hold the Hyper Interdisciplinary Conference in the Philippines 2022 (HIC PH 2022) on November 5, 2022. This year’s conference will be a comeback of face-to-face implementation with the theme “Philippines in 3D: Data-Driven Deep Technology”. This initiative is organized jointly with Batangas State University (BSU) and in partnership with Focus Systems Corp. conducted, a Japanese IT company interested in collaborating and innovating with Filipino researchers. Panel sessions are organized by Japanese startups: Melody International Ltd., Sagri, Co. Ltd. and ZIP Infrastructure, who will all be attending the conference physically and speaking about their startups. The BSU and the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) are also involved in the conference as publication partners through their respective university research journals.

The conference will deal, among other things, with the merging of research areas with data-driven technologies in the form of applied information technology (IT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and big data. It aims to gather and share knowledge about existing problems and solutions to enable S&T actors, especially academic researchers and industrial partners, to occupy the underserved areas of deep technology innovation.

Panel discussions focusing on healthcare, forestry and energy will be held. In addition, research project presentations are held as part of HIC PH’s Research Splash and Engineering Splash sessions to present selected research topics and recent discoveries in their respective fields through short pitch formats presenting their own “spillover of ideas”.

As a testament to Leave a Nest’s continuous pursuit of improving Deep Technology to solve societal problems, Leave a Nest Co., Ltd., the Japanese parent company of Leave a Nest Philippines, Inc., will announce partnership agreements with two Filipino companies Deep -Tech startups in the form of investments and research grants. These two startup companies hope to solve problems related to inefficiencies in reforestation efforts and the integration and management of energy in the country. This follows initial investments by Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. last year 2019 with Wela Online Corp. which since the investment has grown into an EduTech powerhouse in the Philippines and is currently focused on its overseas expansion.

Leave a Nest Philippines hopes that this could be a knowledge production vessel for academia, private companies, government agencies and other participants, and that it can ignite a passion to advance deep technology in research projects here in the country.

The Hyper Interdisciplinary Conference (HIC) in the Philippines is the first leg of the HIC ASEAN Series 2022-2023 organized by Leave a Nest Group in six ASEAN countries. The HIC serves as a platform for researchers, private sector individuals, government agencies, academic institutions and start-up companies to present innovative research ideas and formulate breakthrough opportunities with all participating stakeholders.

HIC Philippines is followed by HIC Indonesia on November 12, 2022, HIC Thailand on November 19, 2022, HIC Vietnam on February 11, 2023, HIC Malaysia on February 18, 2023 and finally HIC Singapore on February 25, 2023.
